Competition Rules
Rules & Conditions of All Games Conducted by the CIBA
All games will be conducted in accordance with the Laws of the Game as laid down by NZ Indoor Bowls Inc.
Where any conditions of play conflict with the Laws of the Game then the Laws of the Game will take precedence.
Once the draw for any tournament or championship has been completed then under no circumstances will teams or players be permitted to change from one section to another.
The draw is random, no attempt will be made to separate clubs in the draw (unlike previous years)
Substitutes will be allowed after the commencement of a game at the discretion of the Controlling Authority. Substitutes will NOT be permitted in singles, substitutes in Fours must play as Lead or Second only or in Pairs or Triples as Lead only. Such substitutes shall not have previously played in the same event.
All games must start at their scheduled time.
Players and teams should be in the hall, paid, and ready no later than 15 minutes before their scheduled game time.
Players should be on their mats ready to play by the official start time.
A delay of up to 10 minutes may only be permitted in exceptional and unforeseen circumstances on the day with notification made to the Hall Controller and is subject to the discretion of the Hall Controller. Failure to be ready within 10 minutes of the official start time will result in a default.
It is the responsibility of the skips to ensure that score cards are correctly completed and are left at the end of their mat nearest the center of the hall.
It is the responsibility of players to see that the result sheets are correctly marked with the result of their games.
Soles and heels of footwear shall be of a form that will not cause damage to the mat or carry foreign matter onto the mat. Play in bare feet is not permitted. Where there is any doubt about the suitability of footwear, the Controlling Authority shall be the sole judge (pun intended).
No food, intoxicating liquor or smoking/vaping is permitted in the playing area. Water bottles are permissible.
Teams must play post section under playing skip’s name.
Players Obligations
The competition, to maintain at all times a high standard of sportsmanship and fair play. This will of necessity include:
Always playing to the best of his/her ability and where appropriate to perform as part of a team.
Abiding by the Laws of the Games, it’s Regulations and the Conditions of Play specified by the Controlling Body.
Respecting and accepting without question any ruling given by the Umpire (subject to any right of appeal given by the Laws).
Not to take any performance enhancing drug.
Mobile phones and smart devices must be on silent and not used during play except in emergencies.
Follow hall health & safety rules and report hazards
Coaching from the sideline is not permitted. Spectators must remain outside the playing area and not interfere with play
To refrain from:
Any behavior or misconduct which might reflect unfavorably on the Game, the CIBA or the team or its management.
ANY DISCRIMINATORY PRACTICES BASED ON RACE, RELIGION, ETHNIC BACKGROUND OR SPECIAL ABILITY/DISABILITY BOWLERS.
Tournament Rules
Canterbury Championship Events
Canterbury Championships are open to all players affiliated to New Zealand Indoor Bowls Federation.
Championship events will consist of Singles, Pairs, Mixed Pairs, Triples, Fours, and Mixed Fours
If Mixed Pairs and Mixed Fours are combined with the NZ Championship Events, then these are open only to players affiliated with Canterbury Indoor Bowls Association and are available for Rep Bowls in Canterbury only.
All games will be played in accordance with the NZ Indoor Bowls Inc. Laws of the Game.
Games will consist of
Singles 12 ends 35 minutes
Pairs 10 ends 45 minutes
Triples 10 ends 45 minutes
Fours 10 ends 60 minutes
Four games will be played in either section play or draw with 5 points or more to qualify. Points will be awarded as 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss.
Post-section play will be drawn by the Controlling Authority once all section games are completed. The draw will be random (no seeding). Byes may be allocated as required to ensure an even progression. Play will then proceed on a knockout basis until a winner is determined.
Entry fee to Canterbury Championship Events is $10 per player except for Juniors which will be $6
Five (5) titles will be awarded a Gold Star. Every subsequent 5 titles will be awarded a Gold Bar.
NZ Championship Events
The event shall be open to all registered indoor bowlers. Entrants can only enter in the District for which they are eligible/nominate to play representative bowls.
NZ Championship will consist of:
New Zealand Mixed Fours – 2 men and 2 women, playing in any order.
New Zealand Mixed Pairs – 1 man and 1 woman, playing in any order.
Henselite Singles – 1 player
NZ Junior Singles – Players must be under the age of 18 on 1st March
National Masters Fours – Players must be 60 years of age and over on 31st March
All games will be played in accordance with the NZ Indoor Bowls Inc. Laws of the Game.
Games consist of
Henselite 15 ends 45 minutes
Junior Singles 12 ends 35 minutes
Pairs 10 ends 45 minutes
Fours 10 ends 60 minutes
Four games will be played in either section play or draw with 5 points or more to qualify. Points will be awarded as 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss.
Post-section play will be drawn by the Controlling Authority once all section games are completed. The draw will be random (no seeding). Byes may be allocated as required to ensure an even progression. Play will then proceed on a knockout basis until a winner is determined
If there are less than 8 teams entered, then the competition will run as a round robin. Each team will play the other with the winner determined on countback of wins/draws, ends, then points.
Entry fee to NZ Championship Events is $10 per player except the Junior Singles which is free.
Winning NZ Championship teams will represent Canterbury in Zones. Zone winners will then go on to play in the national finals at the Super Weekend
Travel and accommodation costs for Zones and Super Weekend are on the players.
Champion of Championships
All entrants must be affiliated with the Canterbury Indoor Bowls Association. Winning club teams having non-affiliated players will be ineligible for the Champion of Champion event. Any entry paid will be forfeited by the club as a penalty for playing unaffiliated bowlers.
Entrants must be found by competition play in each affiliated club. Teams comprise of players playing as near to possible to their normal club grading.
If the entry is insufficient to run a competition but have only one (1) entry (e.g. mixed pairs) then that team will be eligible to compete in the champion of champion event.
Should a member of a team that wins the club championship event be unable to play in the Champion of Champion event they may be replaced by the corresponding player from the runner-up team. If both the winning team member and the runner-up is genuinely unable to play then the club may choose a corresponding grade member to fill the position. Such replacements must be notified to the match committee for approval before play.

Super Sevens
Each Club affiliated with the CIBA is entitled to one or more team entries in this event. When a club enters more than one team, teams are to be named and shall not interchange.
Any players not selected into a club team can place a single entry and teams consisting of 10 players will be made up by the executive.
Players can only represent one Club and one team in this event during a season.
A team shall consist of a minimum of 7 players with the team split into Singles, Pairs, Fours and reserves. A Club may field any of their affiliated players who shall be inter-changeable from game to game. Clubs wishing to field a composite team must seek the approval of the CIBA
All games will be played in accordance with the NZ Indoor Bowls Inc. Laws of the Game.
Games will consist of
Singles 18 ends no time limit
Pairs 15 ends no time limit
Fours 12 ends no time limit
The competition will run as a round robin. Each team will play the each of the others with the winner determined on countback of wins/draws, ends, then points.
Points - In any game:
2 points will be awarded for a win and 1 point for a draw.
No points awarded for a bye.
In the event of a team defaulting, the opposing team shall record a win with average end and scores (of winning teams).
In the event of teams being level at the conclusion of the last round, a countback of ends won and points if needed will decide the winner.
No game to commence more than 10 minutes later than scheduled start time.
Entry fee to is to be determined by the executive which would cover all games.
Osborne Pairs
Osborne Pairs are open to all players affiliated with Canterbury Indoor Bowls Association.
The Pairs Teams must consist of players from the same club.
All games will be played in accordance with the NZ Indoor Bowls Inc. Laws of the Game.
Games will consist of
Pairs 10 ends 45 minutes
Games will be played over two nights with section play running on the first night and post section play running on the second night.
Four games will be played in either section play or draw with 5 points or more to qualify. Points will be awarded as 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss.
Post-section play will be drawn by the Controlling Authority once all section games are completed. The draw will be random (no seeding). Byes may be allocated as required to ensure an even progression. Play will then proceed on a knockout basis until a winner is determined.
Entry fee is $10 per player except for Juniors which will be $6
Canterbury Open Singles
Canterbury Open singles is open to all players affiliated to NZ Indoor Bowls
All games will be played in accordance with the NZ Indoor Bowls Inc. Laws of the Game.
Games will consist of
Singles 12 ends 35 minutes
Four games will be played in either section play or draw with 5 points or more to qualify. Points will be awarded as 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss.

Veterans
Veterans’ tournaments are open to all players who are 60 years of age and over as of 1 July
Veterans’ events will consist of Pairs, Triples, and Fours
All games will be played in accordance with the NZ Indoor Bowls Inc. Laws of the Game.
Games will consist of
Pairs 10 ends 45 minutes
Triples 10 ends 45 minutes
Fours 10 ends 60 minutes
Four games will be played in either section play or draw with 5 points or more to qualify. Points will be awarded as 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss.
Post-section play will be drawn by the Controlling Authority once all section games are completed. The draw will be random (no seeding). Byes may be allocated as required to ensure an even progression. Play will then proceed on a knockout basis until a winner is determined. Time limit applies for all post section games. The final will have an extra 10min added to the game.
Entry fee is $10 per player
Craw Cup Rules
A competition to be held between Canterbury Country, Chartered Clubs and Metro/Catholic combined. The winner of the competition is awarded the Craw Cup. The competition to be held over two (2) evenings.
Teams to consist of thirty (30) players. The thirty (30) players to be arranged into six (6) teams of five (5) players. All players to play three (3) games on each of the two (2) evenings.
There is a time limit of 45 minutes per round.
As well as the time limit the following length of games shall apply:
Singles 15 ends
Pairs 12 ends
Triples 10 ends
Four 8 ends
Rule 28 is suspended. If the final end is killed the prescribed penalty shall apply but the end shall not be replayed.
The first evening will consist of the following games:
The first round to consist of teams splitting into a Fours and a Singles with all games to be played at the same time.
The second round to consist of Pairs and Triples with all games to be played at the same time.
The third round to be a further round of Fours and Singles with all games to be all played at the same time.
The second evening will consist of the following games:
The first round to consist of Pairs and Triples with all games to be played at the same time.
The second round to be a further round of Fours and Singles with all games to be all played at the same time.
The third round to consist of Pairs and Triples with all games to be played at the same time.
Teams are to remain constant over a single evening. If there are two games of Pairs played the same players will play both games. This applies to all games, Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours.
Entry fee for each CIG is $2 per player per night.
The winner of the Craw Cup shall be the Centre/Association with the highest total match points at the conclusion of all scheduled rounds. Match points shall be allocated as follows:
Win – 2 points
Draw – 1 point
Loss – 0 points
In the event of two or more Centers/Associations finishing on equal match points, the winner shall be determined on count-back, in the following order of priority with the highest total number of ends won across all games. If still equal, the highest total points scored across all games.
InterCIG Rules
Teams taking part will be Catholics, Ellesmere, North Canterbury, Metro, CCC. Teams play each of the others each season, (4 games)
That teams consist of five (5) teams of four (4) players.
A draw to be held to determine teams to play each other. A further draw to be held to determine the mats to be played on.
Three rounds of play each night.
Round one: Fours
Round two: Each Fours team will split to play Pairs, Skip with Second, & Thirds with Leads
Round three: Each Fours team will split with one member playing singles & the rest playing Triples
Games will consist of
Singles 10 ends no time limit*
Pairs 8 ends no time limit
Triples 8 ends no time limit*
Fours 8 ends no time limit
* no ends to start after 10.15pm
That two (2) points be recorded for a win, one (1) point for a draw and zero (0) points for a loss.
The group winning the most rounds shall be the champion CIG. Points totaled over the season will be used for count back if no outright winner.
It is the responsibility of the ‘Home’ CIG to forward the results of each of the games to the CIBA Secretary.
The ‘Home’ CIG to alternate each year.
Supper: Tea and Biscuits will be served on completion of games at the discretion of the host area
Mens Tens Rules
A competition to be held between Ashburton, CY Catholics, CY Chartered Clubs, Country North (clubs north of the Waimak River) Country South (clubs south of the Waimak River) and Metro
The competition is to be held on a single day.
The teams will be selected by each CIGs/groups Selectors. Each team will consist of 10 players, up to 2 reserves if necessary, and only 1 non-playing Manager (manager can be of any gender). In each round the Teams shall be formed into the following combinations:
1 x Fours
1 x Triples
1 x Pairs
1 x Singles
2 x reserves (if required)
Combinations of players may be inter-changeable across rounds, eg a player may play in Fours for the first round, Singles for the second round, Triples for the 3rd round, etc. The decision on combinations is the responsibility of the Team Manager.
The format of play will consisit of around robin of 5 rounds. Each team will play a different group in each event per round.
There is a time limit of 1 hour per round
As well as the time limit the following length of games shall apply:
Singles 21 ends
Pairs 15 ends
Triples 12 ends
Fours 10 ends
Rule 28 is applies. If the final end is killed the end shall be replayed for a result but the ends and points shall not be counted in the tally.
The winner shall be the Centre/CIG with the highest total match points at the conclusion of all scheduled rounds. Match points shall be allocated as follows:

Womens Sevens Rules
A competition to be held between CY Catholics, CY Chartered Clubs, Country North (clubs north of the Waimak River) Country South (clubs south of the Waimak River) and Metro
The competition is to be held on a single day.
